Partnerships for Trauma Recovery (PTR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to healing trauma among international survivors of human rights abuses. PTR joins the global movement to reduce the mental health gap by addressing psychological trauma caused by war, torture, human trafficking, and persecution due to identity and beliefs. We strive to narrow the gap by: (a) Expanding the availability of culturally aware, trauma-informed and contextually adapted mental health services; and (b) Reducing factors that cause trauma through trauma-informed policy analysis and advocacy. With combined expertise gained through over twenty years of providing clinical services to survivors of war trauma, torture and persecution, and in-depth experience implementing international human rights programming, our team integrates the fields of global mental health and human rights to expand the range - and increase the depth - of psychosocial support for this highly vulnerable population.

Partnerships for Trauma Recovery (PTR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to healing the psychosocial and psychosocial impacts of trauma among international survivors of human rights abuses, forced displacement resulting from war, torture, persecution related to identity and beliefs, gender-based violence and other forms of interpersonal violence. PTR provides culturally and contextually responsive, trauma-informed and linguistically accessible psychological and psychosocial care for asylum seekers and refugees from around the world.


This is an opportunity to work alongside a dynamic nonprofit organization working at the juncture of global mental health and human rights. Reporting to the Interpreter Program Manager, the primary responsibility of a PTR Interpreter is to support service providers in providing trauma-informed, culturally reflective and linguistically accessible psychological and psychosocial care for international survivors of human rights abuses. PTR interpreters help foster effective cross-cultural communication and participate in reducing stigma related to mental health needs resulting from trauma and loss among newcomer communities. This is a 1099 independent contractor position with no guaranteed number of work hours per week (as needed basis).

Effective July 1, 2022, PTR is transitioning from a full-time tele-health model to a Hybrid Service Delivery model that combines in person direct care with remote work. This position will be required to offer in-person interpretation services as well as remote interpretation services for telehealth meetings utilizing the phone and/or Zoom Health for conducting confidential video or audio conference calls. Assignments are typically within the business hours of Monday – Friday 8 am to 8 pm.

Interpretation is mostly provided in consecutive mode with some opportunities to interpret in simultaneous mode. In order to provide stability for clients, we ask for at least a 4 month work commitment from interpreters. Interpreters must have a strong commitment for promoting human rights, peace and psychosocial wellbeing, as well as the ability to hear stories of extensive trauma and bear witness to significant emotional distress.

COVID-19 considerations: Interpreters must wear a facial covering (mask that covers both nose and mouth) while attending these appointments in person.

The responsibilities of the PTR Interpreter will include the following:

Provision of Interpretation and Translation:

  • Available to interpret in-person and remotely via phone and Zoom Health.
  • Provide clear, consecutive interpretation during client meetings and interactions with PTR service providers.
  • Collaborate with PTR service providers to coordinate and schedule client meetings.
  • Collaborate with PTR service providers, eliciting feedback and examining ways to improve their collective work.
  • Regularly and consistently track interpretation hours and submit monthly invoices.
  • Communicate and respond to emails and calls within 48 hours.
  • Translate written documents such as, but not limited to, flyers and outreach materials from English to other working language(s) as needed.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Native or fully fluent speaker of your working language.
  • Reading and writing in English and your working language (this excludes languages without a written form).
  • Converting concepts in the source language to equivalent concepts in the target language.
  • Relaying the style and tone of the original message from one language to another.
  • Excellent concentration and rendering spoken messages accurately, quickly, and clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting.
  • Availability to work with PTR for at least 4 months at a time.
  • Excellent time management and consistency in timeliness.
  • Flexibility and adaptability, willingness to take feedback and make adjustments.
  • Confidence to ask for clarification when needed.
  • Cultural humility, sensitivity to cultural nuance and respectfulness for identity differences.
  • Appreciation of and strong capacity for maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries.

Preferred Experience

  • Prior experience working as an interpreter in a mental health, healthcare, or social services setting.
  • Previous interpreter training certificate and/or certification.
  • Cultural understanding of the local population that speaks the non-English working language.
  • Experience working with diverse, displaced, and/or under resourced communities.
  • Comfort navigating Google Suite (spreadsheets and docs).
