Since 1925, Valley of the Sun United Way (VSUW) has unified diverse partners, donors, businesses, nonprofits, government, and faith-based communities to build a stronger Valley for us all. United Way belongs to our community, so we seek community input on the most pressing issues, then we bring people, organizations and companies together to proactively solve them. Right now, many people seek trustworthy insights and information AND they want to help, but they don’t know how. United Way makes it simple for people and organizations to be part of the solution; to come together to take action.

We are seeking a Community Development and Engagement (CDE) Director to focus on our Mighty Change 2026 Housing/Homelessness initiatives. The CDE Director develops and provides management to position VSUW as a leader to advance our priorities outlined in our new five-year Mighty Change 2026 plan (Health, Homelessness/Housing, Workforce Development, and Education). This position assesses needs, ensures the program objectives are met, and works closely with the Vice President, CDE. This individual develops solutions that advance VSUW’s vision, mission, and impact in the community related to our priorities. We value the expertise of those who have lived experience of homelessness. We believe that people who have experienced homelessness have the most knowledge in order to end homelessness. We also acknowledge that there is an over representation of those who are black, brown and LGBTQ+ in the homelessness system. That is why we encourage those who have those intersectionality to apply.

The Director will oversee Community Development internal and external operations to ensure acceleration of impact, high quality and relevant services, and cost effective management of resources. The position will convene, facilitate and lead external groups related to VSUW’s priorities. This individual may supervise up to five direct reports.


What This Position Does:

  • Partner with the Vice President and peers in the organization on strategic business development, planning and issues that relate to VSUW priorities and impact the organization and the community.
  • Develop and lead Mighty Change 2026 strategies and engage cross-departmental and organizational teams in the execution of strategies, particularly with United Way’s fundraising teams.
  • Lead staff to evaluate and take actions that are consistent with the organizations overall strategy.
  • Translate the organization’s vision and values into day-to-day activities and behaviors; guide and motivate others to take actions that support the vision and values.
  • Shape and develop organization and team strategy.
  • Ability to represent the Vice President, CDE when there is a need to represent the organization. Develop appropriate level of subject matter expertise in issues.
  • Effectively communicate VSUW talking points to media as needed.
  • Research information and data to identify/explain major trends, problems, causes affecting the community; evaluates information and recommends solutions; design effective community solutions that utilize proven or emerging best practice.
  • Recognize and identify alternative technologies or methods for delivering or producing services/products.
  • Manage team performance including formal reviews, establishing the team and individual goals and individual assessments.
  • Participates in developing and monitoring budget for CDE Department.
  • Build and maintain external relationships with a variety of public and private stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate ability to practice and apply a Diversity, Equity, Access, and Inclusion (DEAI) lens to all aspects of the work to advance the five-year Mighty Change 2026 plan.
  • Other projects as assigned.

Have a degree? Great. Have work experience? Amazing. A combination of education and/or relevant work experience can be considered in lieu of a degree.

Here’s what’s required of this position:

  • At least seven (7) years of professional experience in a nonprofit environment or a related field with a history of progressive leadership.
  • At least three (3) years of supervisor experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Business Management, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in current Microsoft Office Suite.

It would be really great if you:

  • Had a Master’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Business Management, or a related field.
  • Are bilingual in Spanish and English.

  • Leadership/Management: Promotes organizational mission and goals and shows the way to achieve them; Structures and directs others’ work on projects and programs; Manages employees in ways that improve their ability to succeed
  • Planning and Organizing: Plans and organizes tasks and work responsibilities to achieve objectives; Set priorities and schedules activities; Allocates and uses resources properly
