GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Education Assistant serves as a direct service provider to the family members in the shelter. They are responsible for coordinating the logistics of distance learning for families in the shelter; provide educational support for parent residing at LSS CHOICES shelter; stimulate cooperative and coordinated service delivery; provide a communication link between the Family Service program component and other staff and program areas; provide information and recommendations regarding the quality of services provided while maintaining professional standards in conduct.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate logistics of distance learning for families residing in the shelter.
  • Schedule families for rooms and equipment appropriate to childrens educational needs.
  • Model and teach positive forms of educational coaching, discipline, and anger management to both parents and children.
  • Work cooperatively with the Youth Advocate to ensure parents have clear understanding of the expectations from the school and teachers and are communicating pro-actively with the school.
  • Facilitate weekly Story Time.
  • Administer the Study Buddy volunteer program and the summer literacy program.
  • Assign jobs appropriately to volunteer Study Buddies.
  • Provides weekly teen groups when five or more teen residents are in the shelter.
  • Provides weekly STEAM activities for elementary and middle-school children.
  • Participates in the Seeds of Caring youth volunteer activities.
  • Provides thorough documentation on all client related data.
  • Maintain cleanliness of assigned shelter areas being used for education.
  • Attend and contribute to all appropriate staff meetings.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

    • Associates degree in childcare or related field preferred; High School Diploma or GED with equivalent work experience minimum

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of one year experience working with children

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Experience in providing direct services to children and parents
  • Knowledge of early education and child development
  • Basic understanding of computers, on-line learning, and internet connectivity.
