Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Natural Products Chemist to join our Personal Care business at our Merry Hill, North Carolina location. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the Personal Care R&D team. This position will report to a Senior Group Leader in Personal Care R&D.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Interact with internal and external personal as a technical expert in natural products chemistry
  • Work closely with engineering and production teams to solve challenging technical problems for customers
  • Lead and supervise lab technician(s) in safe, effective implementation of process experiments
  • Maintain lab notebooks and logbooks in accordance with company guidelines
  • Comply with company procedural guidelines, laboratory procedures, and safety programs
  • Author technical reports and present technical results to internal and external audiences
  • You must work closely with a group of 3-4 brilliant solvers at the specified location but must also interact with technical colleagues from across the globe
  • Travel responsibilities will be minimal
  • Actively contribute to the organizational goals by taking initiative, executing on goals and focusing on performance and safety
  • Improve the organization capacity and capabilities through building collaborative relationships, optimizing diverse talent and utilizing positive communications and influence with others

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:
  • A Ph.D. in the field of phytochemistry, organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry or related field
  • A deep understanding of the chemistry of natural products from botanical and microbiological origins
  • Experience in process development, optimization and scale-up of extraction and related down-stream purification operations including solvent extraction, partitioning, preparative chromatography and crystallization
  • Practical knowledge of analytical instrumentation including HPLC and GC
  • Knowledge of green chemistry techniques including enzyme-mediated reactions and bio-transformations
  • Ability to independently search and evaluate technical patents and literature
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
  • Demonstrated responsible and ethical behavior at all times
  • The ability to help the company drive greater value through understanding the business, making complex decisions and creating the new and different

The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:
  • 1-5 years of industry experience in R&D natural products chemistry
  • Experience in lab-scale fermentations and product recovery
  • General understanding of synthetic organic chemistry methods
  • Working knowledge of stage-gate processes for the development of ingredients and consumer products
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team environment across multiple locations
