About the Role
BookNook Tutoring is working to dramatically expand our online tutor team to support the learning needs of K-8th grade students across the country. In order to meet our ambitious goals, we need a skilled and collaborative team focused on process and operations - building the systems that will ensure tutors feel prepared and supported to begin tutoring. The tutor operations team will focus on both technical and adaptive opportunities to support the development of a smooth, positive and supportive environment for tutors and students alike. The Payroll Operations Specialist manages our tutor payroll process and all communications for thousands of BookNook tutors. This position requires a person who is highly organized, has superb written communication skills and can manage and track multiple details simultaneously. The ideal candidate is an Excel guru, someone who double and triple checks everything, and has a customer service approach to supporting our tutors. Reporting to the Director, Talent Operations, this position will play a key role in developing BookNook Tutoring into an outstanding work experience for tutors.

At BookNook, you will:

  • Manage the bi-monthly payroll process for our 1099 tutors and drive improvements as needed
  • Collaborate with our BookNook finance and people teams in the implementation of payroll and systems work
  • Ensure all additional tutor compensation (bonuses, reimbursements) are tracked and paid in a timely manner
  • Support the regular onboarding of all tutors into our payroll system
  • Ensure all tutors meet BookNook’s onboarding requirements for payroll (contract, W9, completed bank information) within our designated timeframe
  • Act as primary point of contact for all tutor questions related to payroll in a positive, timely and supportive manner
  • Oversee creation of payroll related knowledge management resources to ensure tutors have the clear and concise information that they need
  • Manage the off-boarding of tutors from our payroll systems
  • Support the overall onboarding operations processes as needed
  • Support in research and implementation of new systems as needed
  • Drive any end of year communications to tutors regarding tax forms

What we are looking for

  • 3+ years experience in payroll operations or a similar role managing people operations in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. The support culture you model will be critical to the job satisfaction of thousands of tutors.
  • Exceptional project management skills, with an ability to keep track of all the details, follow through on every one, and keep multiple priorities on track
  • Demonstrated experience setting, meeting and/or exceeding operational performance metrics
  • Highly comfortable learning new technology, and adept at using Excel and Google Suite daily
  • A self-starter approach to fast-paced, ever-changing work environment
  • An entrepreneurial mindset that embraces startup culture and “building the plane while flying it,” with an excitement for building and improving them as you go
  • Enjoy developing, running and improving systems with an eye for efficiency, excellence, and the user experience
  • Familiarization with various project management software a plus (Asana, Google Sheets)
  • Passionate about supporting educators, so they can focus on supporting students.
